MIASA, Uni-Ghana, DHIP and HBFS organize a Public Roundtable as part of a Workshop on "Women’s Academic Careers in Africa: Strategies and Funding", June 25, 2021

The Public Roundtable on “Female Academic Careers in Africa: Strategies and Funding” was organized on Friday, 25 June 2021, from 9:30-11:30 UTC by the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA), University of Ghana, in collaboration with the German Historical Institute Paris (DHIP) and the Heinrich Boell Foundation Senegal (HBFS).

The speakers were :
1. Prof. Nadine Machikou (Faculty of Law and Political Sciences, University of Yaounde 2)
2. Prof. Mavis Dako-Gyeke (Associate Professor and Head of the  Social Work Department, University of Ghana)
3. Dr. Netsanet Gebremichael Weldesenbet (Lecturer, Institute of Ethiopian Studies, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia)
4. Prof. Djénéba Traoré (West Africa Institute (WAI), Praia, Cabo Verde)

The workshop was organized in a hybrid way with groups meeting in Dakar, Bamako and Accra as well as one only-online group.

The round table took place online and was open to a wider audience. 

During her talk, Prof. Djénéba Traoré briefly related her academic background and professional career in terms of diplomas obtained, functions performed, funding acquired and regarding the difficulties related to fundraising.

All speakers, based on their different professional experiences, made certain recommendations in the area of ​​fundraising and  scientific publication.

The roundtable took place in the framework of a workshop on Female Academic Careers in Africa mainly funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in Germany. The workshop brought together 23 early career female scholars from across Africa. 

Along with two roundtables, the workshop included two advanced trainings, one in English with Dr. Ruth Murambadoro, and one in French with Prof. Fatou Diop Sall. 

The organizing team consisted of Dr. Susann Baller (DHIP, MIASA) – Dr. Fatoumata Keita (Uni- Bamako) – Dr. Laure Carbonnel (IHA-CREPOS) – Dr. Haydée Bangerezako (UCAD) – Dr. Selly Bâ (Heinrich Böll Foundation Senegal)
